Laminator, What is that?

March 10th, 2010

In simple terms…to PROTECT the print or extend the life expectancy! Virtually all forms of digital inkjet printing technology needs either a film or liquid laminate for protection. Yes, even the solvent based inkjet prints. Solvent based inks with no lamination may last up to two years in outdoor conditions, but to achieve the longest possible durability a laminate must be added.

Your typical aqueous (water) based inkjet prints are more prone to damage than the solvent based prints. Sometimes all it takes is a drop of sweat, a splash of water or accidentally touching a dirty surface to turn a beautiful print into garbage. Humidity and moisture are big problems for the aqueous prints. Have you ever seen what happens to a photo gloss print that is placed under glass or in a plastic sleeve that has not been laminated? It’s not a pretty sight to see a perfectly good print stuck to the inside of the glass or plastic. However, there are water resistant inkjet materials available which can resolve some of these problems, but may leave a watermark or stain on the print.

Handling these prints may not be as easy as it sounds. A kink in the material or a minor scrape against an object could possibly cause the ink to come off and then its back to the printing stage again. Basically, you handle the prints with care until they are protected. The product line for aqueous inks are improving, but it’s doubtful that we will be able to get completely away from the use of laminates and those new materials will have a higher cost associated with them.

Remember that it is up to you to inform your client as to what is needed to protect the print, because they may not understand the various applications to digital printing. You have to assist the client in making certain decisions on the finished product and have a good understanding of how the print is to be used. Is it used indoors or outdoors? Is it a one day event? What elements will the print be exposed to? More than likely, the client will rely on you to make the decision as to the material, ink and lamination (if needed) to use for their project.

Longevity is an issue with digital printing. How long will it last? Truthfully, no one knows for sure. I, personally have few prints that are over ten years old that were digitally printed using a photo gloss material and a 5mil hot laminate with dye based inks. They look as good as the day they were printed, but then again these prints have never been exposed to sunlight or exposed to extreme conditions. In looking at the vehicle wraps and graphics that we see everyday, we really don’t know how long they will last. Be assured that the people that produced those graphics made every effort to protect the print and maximize the life expectancy. Even if they were only to be used for a short period of time.

There are others out there, but the above are the companies that you may recognize by name. Is one better than the other? Not necessarily. It all depends upon what you need and what your future goals might be. Features in theses machines could be the deciding factor along with the price tag.

Types of laminators
Laminators come in all shapes and sizes. The sizes may range from an identification card size up to 80″ in width. Each type or style of laminator has its specific purpose. Some are designed to have a multiple use design, while others only have one purpose in mind.

The most common laminator, known as the “Pouch Laminator”, is found in office supply stores that offer lamination services. These laminators are fairly inexpensive and have the capabilities to laminate up to 11″ x 17″ (ledger size) documents. The pouch laminator uses sheets of laminate that are V-shaped. A document is inserted into the V-shaped (pouch) laminate and feed into the laminator. As the laminate is fed through, heat is applied to activate the glue and seal the document in a coating of laminate. This is also known as “Encapsulating”, and as long as the document has an overlap of laminate around the edges, it is waterproof. The pouch laminator only uses hot laminates and is fairly easy to use.

Another type of laminator is the “Roll Laminator”. This style of laminator uses rolls of laminate that are pressed between two rubber or silicon rollers to apply the laminate to the document. Size of the laminator can vary from 12″ to 80″ in width with as many features as there are sizes. Among these laminators there are two types, which are “Hot” or “Cold”. A “Hot” laminator has the advantage of using either hot or cold laminates, whereas the “Cold” laminators only use cold laminates. Even though they may look identical, they’re not!

Hot laminators heat the roller or rollers up to temperatures that can exceed 240 degrees. The heated roller(s) activates the glue of the laminate as it is being fed through the machine. This laminator can also use cold laminates by not heating the roller(s). One option that you may have is that both the upper and lower rollers can be heated. A distinct advantage when encapsulation is needed. The dual heated rollers allow for encapsulation of a printed item in one pass, similar to the above mentioned “Pouch” laminators. There are specific roll laminators that are designed for dye sublimation processes. The laminator is outfitted with steel rollers that can reach temperatures greater than 400 degrees.

A roll laminator is the most widely used type for digital printing, but it has other uses too! Do you ever get tired of applying transfer tape to those big projects? Solution…try using a laminator and cut your labor time in half. What about mounting a print to some type of board such as a foam board, art board, pvc or plexiglass? Do you have several one color yard signs to apply vinyl to? You can always find some use for a laminator!

One of the latest additions to the family of laminators is the liquid laminator. This type of unit was originally designed to accommodate digital prints that used an oil or solvent based ink, but can also be used for aqueous based prints too. These machines are commonly used in conjunction with the grand format digital printers and thus can be very large, up to 16′ in length. Features for the liquid laminator may include a roll to roll feed system and a drying system. There are two types of liquid laminators, one that uses pumps and the other that uses a gravity feed system to apply the liquid laminate. The liquid laminate can be applied in various thicknesses to accommodate the prints use and/or longevity. The great thing about liquid laminate is its cost and that it can provide the same amount of protection that a film laminate might.

The cons to looking into any type of laminator may appear to be the cost, but if you weigh out the alternatives you may find the significant time savings, and time is money, that can offset the expense, plus satisfied customers. Below are some examples of how to utilize your laminating machine.

. Create and personalize your own ornaments. Color and cut out holiday items such as trees, stockings and snowmen from construction paper. Laminate and hole-punch each ornament and hang by a ribbon on your tree. An excellent idea for kids. Design personalized gift Savor holiday recipes by laminating them. You can also copy these recipes and laminate them to create a great gift for your daughter who just got her own apartment. Add these recipes to your own cookbook. Make your own holiday gifts such as bookmarks (color and laminate) and refrigerator magnets (color, laminate then add a magnet strip to the back) for your family and friends. Or, print and laminate these Coupons to tuck in a stocking. Produce the perfect holiday placemats. Trace your favorite cookie cutters along the edge of the placemat, decorate and laminate. 5 Great Ideas for Safe Halloween Celebrations With Kids

March 10th, 2010

All kids love Halloween, but many parents don’t because of worries surrounding trick-or-treating.

You don’t want your children to be out on the street on their own; you’re not keen on the quality of the treats they bring home; and you may even be worried that someone could put something in a treat bag that would be unsafe. …but all your little munchkins want to do is get out there and have some fun! What can you do?

Well, there are a whole range of options available, and 5 of the easiest are right here for you:

1. Organise a trick or treat tour.

The TOUR element is the important bit. Choose a route with a number of pre-arranged stops, and agree with the householders at those stops what to give as treats and how much. It’s a good idea if you can do this with other parents in the area. Make sure that the kids know that there is a plan and they have to stick to it – or else forfeit their treats! Make sure that there is a chaperone available to accompany the kids on their rounds too.

2. Tell ghost stories around the fire.

If you don’t live in town or near other families with kids to help you with a tour, have some old-fashioned spooky fun at home. Have an open fire or gather a few candles on the table and take it in turns to tell gruesome ghost-stories. After each story toast a few marshmallows on skewers. The person voted spookiest story-teller wins a prize.

3. Have a competition to keep the gang busy.

Got a few kids you can pitch against each other and keep them busy? Great! Have a competition to make the best Halloween creature. A ghost-making competition is a good one, as all you need are a few old sheets (from a charity shop if you don’t have any) and the colouring and craft supplies you probably already have at home. Think of a prize to give to the winner – and to forestall arguments, make it something that is big enough to share with all the others. The great thing about this sort of competition is that it works for any number of kids from 2 upwards.

4. Host a Halloween party.

We don’t often see old fashioned Halloween parties nowadays and more’s the pity. Some traditional tricks and games will keep kids (and grown-ups!) happy all evening and won’t break the bank either. Think: apple bobbing; find the eyeballs (pickled onions in a big pan of water and tea-leaves – which feels disgusting!); and the finger in the matchbox. Ask your own parents and grandparents for more ideas – they will remember doing all of these things as children.

5. Find alternative activities in your area.

If you want a quiet life, have a look in your local area for organised activities that you can take your children along to. Organised activities can be more expensive than doing it at home, but you don’t have to worry about arranging it yourself. Schools and youth clubs may be organising parties, and visitor attractions may be doing something special for Halloween this year. Check online listing sites and local newspapers and magazines for details.

How To Craft A Headline That Pulls In Your Target Reader

March 10th, 2010

It is a proven fact that the headline is the most important part of any advertisement. No matter how good the rest of your copy is, if your headline stinks your ad will fail. It’s that simple.

How can so few lines of copy be so important? Because the headline is your first (and often last) chance to make an impression on a reader. It needs to grab the reader by the collar and make it impossible for him to continue without reading the rest of your message. If your headline fails the rest of your copy will never even be read.

The primary purpose of your headline is to get the readers attention. But when crafting your headline, it’s important to remember that you’re not trying to attract everyone. You only need to attract people who would be interested in your offer.

A misleading or vague headline will earn you lots of readers who are not at all interested in your product. They’ll realize this as soon as they get past your headline and you’ll quickly lose them.

Meanwhile, you will have lost many others who would have loved your product but didn’t stop to read your sales page because the headline didn’t grab them.

Choosing your target audience carefully is a vital part of crafting a headline that sells. You really have to walk a fine line to get it just right, and it takes a lot of practice and testing.

In Scientific Advertising, the legendary Claude Hopkins uses newspaper headlines to demonstrate the importance of targeting your headline just right:

“Suppose a newspaper article stated that a certain woman was the most beautiful woman in the city. That article would be of intense interest to that woman and her friends. But neither she nor her friends would ever read it if the headline was ‘Egyptian Psychology’”.

For a more contemporary example, we can look to Google AdWords.

Let’s say you run a website that sells specialty teas. You want to drive some traffic to a special you’re having on a delicious Earl Grey.

You can only use a limited number of characters for your headline so you have to choose your words carefully. You could use a headline that simply stated what your site is about, such as “Specialty Teas”, but the traffic you’d receive would not be very targeted.

You’d likely get a lot of “tire-kickers” who are just browsing or looking for free information. Since you pay for each visitor, you’d be spending good advertising money on poor quality traffic.

Instead you could try something like “Earl Grey Sale Ends Today”.

This simple example off the top of my head shows how you would target someone looking for earl grey tea.

Someone searching for “earl grey” sees your ad and immediately knows:

1. You have the exact product they’re looking for

2. They can save money because you’re having a sale

3. The sale ends today so they have to act fast!

That’s a lot of information packed into 5 little words. See how tightly targeted it is? The people who click on your ad will be very likely to buy from you.

And people who are only interested in free information about chamomile tea will know not to bother – they are not your buyer anyhow.

Candy Canes Crafts – Homemade Christmas Decorations

March 10th, 2010

Candy canes are most often used at Christmas time for decorations for the tree or to satisfy a sweet tooth. These minty candies can be used for many types of inexpensive decorations around the house and given out as small gifts to holiday visitors as well. Candy canes can be used in different holiday crafting projects too.

One inexpensive holiday craft project is a candy cane pillar. This easy idea is so simple, quick and looks fabulous too. All you need is a box of candy canes and a candle in any holiday color you choose. Begin by breaking off the curved end of the candy cane so you have a straight piece. One you have complied your straight pieces, use a hot glue gun to attach the pieces to the candle. Arrange the pieces so the entire candle is covered. Once dry, you can place your candy candle creation in a glass dish or candle jar. Complete the decoration by placing garland around the base and add bells, artificial holiday flowers or berries or any other items you prefer. Now you have just created a beautiful centerpiece for you table just in time for Christmas dinner.

Candy canes are commonly used as Christmas tree decorations, but you can also use them in other areas of your home to decorate. Another low cost holiday decoration is to drape a long garland over doorway or window frames and hang small or large candy canes on the garland. This is very easy to do, does not cost very much and really adds to the festivity of you home.

Using these simple, inexpensive holiday crafts can help save you money on your Christmas budget, yet make it look like you spent a fortune on decorations for your home. You are sure to get many compliments on your beautiful Christmas creations.

Elevator Pitch: 7 Steps to a Killer 30-second Commercial That Works Every Time

March 10th, 2010

Copyright (c) 2008 OnlineBizU.com

Even though your business may be completely Internet based, there are still numerous times when you need to give your elevator pitch (elevator speech), or your 30-second commercial that explains what you do and how you do it. It’s called an elevator pitch because it’s generally something you could tell someone in an elevator between floors in response to the person’s inquiry about what you do. Whether you’re a guest on a teleclass, hosting a teleclass, being interviewed for a radio talk show, creating a podcast, talking to prospective clients on the phone, striking up a conversation with a stranger at the grocery store, or simply writing web copy for your website or blog, you need a clear, concise way to explain your business to others.

I’ve seen savvy service business owners take this concept to new levels as follows: –using their elevator pitches as audio introductions on their websites; –printing their elevator speech on their business cards; –creating a flash movie with audio, graphics and animations that they copy to CDs to send to prospective clients or post on video sites like YouTube; and –creating a TwitPitch where they’re asked to condense their elevator pitch to Twitter’s 140 character maximum to respond to a request for proposal.

So, even if you don’t attend face-to-face networking meetings, which has traditionally been the most commonplace use of an elevator speech, having a ready-made elevator pitch at your disposal continues to be an important marketing tool that you need to continuously sharpen.

I have a simple template that I use with my clients to build their elevator pitches. By completing the following sentences you can create your own elevator speech that will provide a crystal clear answer to what you do.

1. You know how some (the customer you are aiming at)…

2. Experience (the problem)…

3. Which means that (the outcome of the problem)…

4. Well I do/can do is (your job/product/service)…

5. Which means that (the solution)…

6. The benefit of which is (the outcome of the solution)…

7. Would you like to know more?

As an example, here is the elevator speech that I recently helped one of my coaching clients design for her Virtual Assistant practice:

You know how some personal and professional coaches do a wonderful job with coaching but feel completely overwhelmed with all the day-to-day administrative details involved in running their businesses…which means that they try to do it all alone and let opportunities and follow-up contacts fall through the cracks, involve themselves in tasks that prevent them from going out and finding new clients, and dig themselves deeper and deeper into a never ending to-do list. Well, what I do is take over all the administrative headaches that coaches want to get rid of and don’t like to do….which means that I am expertly managing all the day-to-day business operational details from my home office as an independent contractor…the benefit of which is my clients get more energy from working fewer hours, more clients, greater profits, more balanced lives and more passion for their work. Would you like to know more?

Practice makes perfect, so create several versions of your elevator pitch until you find just the right combination that flows effortlessly from your lips, without any stuttering or stammering. A well-crafted 30-second elevator speech is a beautiful tool to have, and you never know where you may get the opportunity to use it!

Make the Most of Stencils

March 10th, 2010

Stencils are not just fun things for your kids to play with or for the serious artist. Anyone can use stencils to improve their home decor. Take a look at the ideas in this article and start making the most of stencils today.
Stencils

If you are thinking of doing some redecorating in your house, or are looking for a fun way to create professional quality arts and crafts, then you should consider using stencils. With stencils, a world of creative possibilities will be opened up to you that will allow you to create truly stunning works of art in your own home.

A stencil can be best thought of as a physical negative; it is simply a sheet of material – usually plastic or a heavy construction paper – that has had sections removed to create an image. All you have to do to recreate the imagine is to place the stencil on the recipient object and run paint or some other pigment over the entire stencil. For more details visit to www.positive-idea.com .Because the paint will have passed through the holes in the stencil onto the recipient object, you will be left with a perfect recreation of the image. Want to create a second or third image? Just use the stencil again as often as you want to create identical images.

How to Use Stencils for Home Decor

Stencils can be incorporated into almost any home improvement or arts and crafts project you do. Indeed, your imagination is the only real limit to where you can use stencils.

A popular use for stencils with arts and crafts is to create beautiful greeting cards. Instead of using stock cards this holiday, why not create personalized holiday cards with the use of a stencil? Stencils can also be a great way to encourage creativity in children. Younger ones will enjoy using stencils because they can do all the work themselves and still end up with a perfect image.

The most popular use for stencils around the house is for border – whether around wall edges or as a border around windows or door frames. A more creative use of stencils is to paint large images on your walls; in this way, you are using stencils in the place of or as a trendy alternative to wallpaper.

How to create the best high quality stencil images

Stencils are undeniably easy to use – that is, after all, one of their main attractions. Nonetheless, you can take steps to ensure that you are creating the best images possible. for more information logon to www.change-ur-mind.com .If this is your first time stenciling, it is probably a good idea to try it out on pieces of paper before painting a large oriental flower scene on your dinning room wall! It is important to get a feel for how much pressure to use when applying the paint, and – importantly – how much paint to use. You will likely be surprised at how little paint is actually needed to create a strong image.

To place the stencil on the wall, you have two options. The cheaper method is to simply use masking tape. The advantage of masking tape, other than its economy, is that it does not need to be cleaned off of the stencil, as opposed to adhesive repositioning spray, your other main option. Adhesive repositioning spray creates a firmer hold than masking tape, and is quicker to apply. Masking tape will still be a better option if you are planning to use both sides of the stencil, however, as you will have to wash off the glue before attempting to paint that side of the template.

Spring Decorating Ideas For Your Front Porch

March 10th, 2010

They say we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover by we all do that sometimes. It’s the human side of us. Just like a book cover gives a hint as to what’s inside the book, our front porch gives a hint about our home. With spring’s arrival, is your front porch inviting, warm and friendly? When guests stop by your home, are they greeted by a charming porch that has some character and personality?

Whether you have a contemporary porch or an open country porch, all that matters is that it exudes some personality and warmth to your home. An inviting porch has a cared-for look. Let me share three spring decorating ideas for your front porch to add some sparkle and curb appeal to your porch. No matter the season, there are always ways to add that special something.

1 – Dust your porch!

First, dust your porch – not with a dust cloth, no. Use your hose to gently spray the floor, and sides down. A bucket of warm sudsy water does wonders. After all, porches get grimy and dusty. Leaves get trapped in corners. Weeds pop up in the corners and spider webs hang where you wished they didn’t. Light bulbs may need to be replaced, too. Just like the insides of our homes, porches need love, too!

So think of your porch as a room of your home and give it a good old-fashioned spring cleaning.

2 – Give Some Attention to Your Porch Furniture

Your furniture probably needs some tender loving care also. Wash it down with some sudsy water and let it air dry. Replace faded, frayed, or torn cushions with fresh smart-looking new cushions. Give your porch swing a fresh coat of high quality exterior paint or stain and seal it. If it squeaks, give it a little oil, too.

3 – Re-think the Amenities on Your Porch

Now this might be a lot to think about if you have a large porch and a lot of stuff! How about a new welcome mat? That’s a very modest investment but you’d be surprised at how much a new welcome mat will get noticed. Also, it gives your porch that cared-for look, too! Home improvement and discount stores have so many welcome mats to choose from – even your favorite sports team, beautiful flowers or a snappy welcome message.

Do you have old faded plastic flowers on your porch or last season’s decorations still out? Yikes, it’s time to take them down and replace them with fresh new plants (weather permitting). A beautiful fern or a mix of annual flowers can look terrific in a heavy stone pot. Look at yard sales for pretty pots.

Find something new to put on your porch – maybe a unique metal table that you find at a flea market. Paint it a bold metallic color and it will become a neat conversation piece.

Replace faded flags and banners with some brand spanking new flags and banners. Craft stores and home improvement centers usually have a nice assortment of seasonal flags for just about any season or time of the year. It’s an easy way to make your porch look cared-for and inviting.

And lastly, don’t overlook the possibilities that your front door offers for seasonal decorating! Create a spring wreath or purchase one from your craft store.  Find a basket that’s flat on the back to hang on your front door. Fill it with colorful spring flowers like tulips, daffodils and pansies. Use your imagination and have fun with your porch.

Summary

So that was quick – three simple ways to jazz up your porch without busting your budget: a little sprucing up, restoring life to your furniture, and paying attention to the amenities on your porch. You may find something classy to place on your porch when you least expect it. Your porch can be a little piece of heaven if you give it some TLC. These tips are just the beginning of a long porch-sitting season!

Making Your Own Valentines Day Gifts

March 9th, 2010

Stores and florists spend a great deal of time, money and effort promoting their products as perfect for Valentine’s Day. This is done for good reason as most people turn to commercially available products on Valentine’s Day to give a great gift to their loved ones. However, with a little effort you may find you can give your partner a really great gift on Valentine’s Day which comes straight from your heart. This can be done in the form of a homemade gift. Despite what you may be thinking it does not take a great deal of time or talent to make these great gifts. This article will provide a few ideas for homemade gifts you can give to your loved one on Valentine’s Day.

A scrapbook is one of the most obvious homemade gifts you can give to your partner on Valentine’s Day. It is also one of the easiest homemade gifts you can make and also one of the gifts which is most likely to be greatly appreciated by your partner. This is a great combination if you want to give your partner a spectacular gift on Valentine’s Day. To make a great scrapbook start out by selecting the pictures you want to use in the scrapbook. You can select pictures of each of you individually, pictures of the two of you together, pictures of places the two of you have visited together or any combination of the pictures previously mentioned. Once you select a series of pictures you really like there will likely be an obvious theme for the scrapbook. Once this theme emerges you can search for the scrapbook as well as accessories for the scrapbook such as stickers, ribbons or other graphics. Finally, assembling the scrapbook is as easy as gluing the pictures and accessories to the page and putting everything together in an order which makes sense.

Homemade candles are another great gift you can give your partner for Valentine’s Day. Making candles is actually quite simple. You can find kits in craft supply stores which will not only include everything you need to make a great candle or two but also provide you with simple step by step instructions on how to melt the wax, insert the wick, pour the candle and allow the candle to set before releasing it from the mold. Also, there will likely be the opportunity to use dyes and perfumes to create a candle of a customized color and scent. When adding color or scent to a candle, care should be taken to add the dye or perfume at the appropriate time for the best results.

One final idea for a homemade Valentine’s Day gift is a CD filled with your partner’s favorite music or a DVD with pictures of videos of the two of you together. You can even combine the videos with movie clips or music which you think fits well with the rest of the images or video. This may sound like it is extremely difficult but it really is not. With the technological advancements being made, many of us would be surprised to learn that we can do a lot of these things on our own computers at home. However, if you are having a great deal of trouble, you might want to consider consulting a friend or family member for advice on how to accomplish your goal. This way you can still give your loved one a homemade gift for Valentine’s Day but you will have some help with the most difficult parts of the project.
