Fun Crafts For Teens Making Jewellery

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Many teen girls look for a new hobby to start. Making jewellery is an ideal hobby for teen girls to have. Jewellery making is fun and very creative. This hobby is one that will enable them to make inexpensive gifts for family and friends. They can take pride in making beautiful jewellery that they can wear to school, work and special events.

Jewellery making is an easy hobby for teen girls to start. Beading is most likely the easiest type of jewellery to make. To make bead jewellery, you need elastic stretch cord, beads and a bead board. A bead board is used to design any of your beaded creations. You lay out your beaded necklace, earrings, bracelet or anklet out on the bead board to see if you like the way the beads go together.

When you like the way the beads look with each other, you know you’ve got a great combination that will make jewellery you’ll love. Using a bead board makes making bead jewellery so much easier. This saves you time and also keeps your precious beads from slipping and rolling all over the place. Losing beads while working on projects can be quite frustrating, and can get very expensive.

There are many different types of beads to select from. You can make beads out of just about any type of material you can think of. There are paper beads that you can buy or make. You can also purchase gemstone beads; often these are quite popular as many teen girls love to create gemstone jewellery with their birthstone gemstones. Beads are also made out of metal, plastic and clay. Lots of teen girls make their own beads out of polymer clay. This clay comes in many fun colors and is easily baked in a conventional oven. It is easy to use and gets very attractive results.

There are many jewellery making classes available to teach this hobby to teen girls. Teen girls can also learn this hobby simply by reading from a book or even discovering projects on the Internet. Many jewellery supply stores list free projects and this is a great way to learn jewellery making as you discover projects that appeal to you. Often when we find a project that appeals to us, we feel challenged to learn exactly how to make that specific craft and discover the techniques to make it.

Jewellery making is an ideal hobby for a teen girl because so many of them simply love fashion. Not only do they love fashion, their tastes and preferences change as fast as the wind blows and the seasons change. Making their own jewellery can be a great way to make any outfit look attractive and to stretch a teen’s fashion budget. They can easily move into the latest trends by making jewellery that suits that trend. By trying out this jewellery for a while, they can also see if they like that trend, without making a big fashion commitment.

There is also a great sense of pride that comes from being able to make something with your own two hands. Anyone feels pride when they do something, this is especially important for teens. Teenage girls often have trouble with low self-esteem. Giving them a hobby where they learn how to create something original and creative is a great way to give their self-esteem a real boost. Giving a teenage girl the hobby of jewellery making could be so helpful, as they learn how to make jewellery for themselves and others. It is a wonderful way to express themselves.

Jewellery making is an ideal hobby for any teen girl. This is a portable craft that can be easily taken on vacation or anywhere that the family goes. It can be done in any season. Many projects can be completed in an afternoon or a weekend. Jewellery making is fun, and just keeps getting better!

Hobbies: Arts and Crafts Idea – Foam Sheet Glasses Case

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Are you a camp director, teacher, or homeschool mom looking for a new arts and crafts idea for your kids? Or maybe you are a recreation director at a senior center or nursing home and could use a new project. Either way, this arts and crafts idea will be interesting and fun for all. This glass case can be used, given as a gift, or converted into a necklace purse.

To make the glasses case, you will need the following simple materials: a square of craft foam, plastic or large blunt needles, lanyard lace or thick yarn. Cut two rectangles from the foam, each 3-1/2 inches (9 cm.) by 6 inches (15 cm.). With a hole punch, make holes on three sides of each rectangle, leaving one short side unpunched. Make the holes 1/2 inch apart and allow at least 1/4 inch between the hole and the edge of the craft foam. The holes need to line up so that the two pieces can be laced together. If you are preparing the craft for small children, you should make the holes yourself. Otherwise, the crafters can do this step if you have enough pairs of hole punches.

At this point the crafters can cut decorative shapes from other colors of craft foam, or you can buy sets of ready-cut foam shapes. If you are doing the craft at a special event, like vacation Bible school, choose shapes that echo the theme of the event. For instance, if the Bible school or camp has a cowboy theme, find shapes that fit well, such as boots, cowboy hats, and stars. Let the kids choose the shapes they like and glue on as desired. You might also like to provide beads or sequins to glue on as well, especially if the crafters are a little older.

The next step in this arts and crafts idea is to thread the plastic needle with the yarn or lanyard lace. Yarn might be a little easier to handle, but lanyard lace is shiny and attractive. In a pinch, some teachers of small children use a bobby pin as a needle. It is certainly a safe alternative. Simply loop the yarn through the opening and use the open end of the bobby pin as if it were the point of the needle. The children can now begin to lace the front and back of the glasses case together.

To turn this arts and crafts idea into a necklace purse, simply attach a piece of lanyard lace to each corner making a long handle. Kids will enjoy using this case as a place to store secret notes and small objects. If they’d rather, they can give the glasses case to a parent, grandparent, or friend who wears glasses. Either way, this arts and crafts idea will be interesting for all.

Decorating the Arts & Crafts Bungalow

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Standing alone with it’s understated elegance and simple appeal, the Craftsman Style Bungalow started today’s ongoing shift towards simple, uncluttered interiors. At the turn of the last century,in diligent rejection of severe Victorian standards and pretentious interior design, the Arts & Crafts Movement promoted a return to true craftsmanship.

Understated elegance, simplicity in purpose, and form following function are hallmarks of the well designed Craftsman Bungalow. The current trend awareness of environmental issues and “green living” dovetails into this aesthetic has resulting in a resurgence of interest in the Arts and Crafts Style.

Creative use of space in traditional bungalows typically included built in cabinetry and open practical floor plans. Many of today’s newer craftsman style homes and bungalows are much larger than at the turn of the century, but still reflect open styling and distinct interior and exterior detailing.

Original Craftsman homes with their darker wood interior details often boasted lots of windows to bring in natural sunlight. Choose sheer, simple fabrics for window coverings to allow ample light into the home. A simple embroidered detail along the hemline will add the “craftsman touch.”

The natural interior colors for your craftsman style home can be easily inspired by nature. Think of using the colors of a vineyard, the different hues of fall leaves, the muted tones of stones. Nature is anything but boring! It is soothing to the eye to follow your interior colors as they continue outside, as when glancing through a window or an open door. Take your outdoor surroundings into consideration, the colors of the foliage and sky. The craftsman style home ideally feels as if it is “growing” from it’s foundation. Colors should reflect nature and never be glaring or harsh.

There are talented artisans reproducing craftsman furniture at many price points. Do your research and look for the best quality you can afford. Try not to fall for the cheap imitations, take it slow and furnish your home with one or two fabulous pieces at a time. Your beautiful home will be much more reflective of you when doing it this way. Don’t be afraid to mix antiques with good quality reproductions. Simple and sturdy well made pieces will give your home the look you are after. You can easily mix in textural upholstered pieces in a simple shapes to soften the room. Embroidered pillows and tabletop linens also “soften the edges” of the typically masculine forms of mission furniture, adding color and texture to delight the eye.

Don’t underestimate the effect lighting will have a on the feel of your craftsman home. It can never be said too often, mixing good quality carefully chosen pieces with your antiques is a great way to get the most from your design dollar. Remember to balance overhead lighting with table lamps and pendants to create flattering light from several heights in the room. Combine fixtures of different materials, a stained glass floor light, a hand blown glass shade on a table lamp, perhaps pendant lights over the dining room table or kitchen island. Hand crafted artisan lighting is a great way to add quality to your home and can give the richness of an antique at a fraction of the cost.

Rugs can vary from Navajo style to the many beautiful Arts and Crafts patterns produced today.

Remember to add your personal touch with accessories made of hand hammered copper, Tile and pieces of Art Pottery to complete the Craftsman Touch.

Three Easy Paper Halloween Crafts

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Different kinds of paper are probably some of the best materials to use for crafts because of their wide variety of uses and the ease with which they can be handled. Easy paper Halloween crafts might be a good idea for a craft project this October. Here are some of them.

Trick or Treat Bags

One great project for easy paper Halloween crafts are bags that you can give away during trick or treat. The simplest trick or treat bag design would be pasting pumpkin cut outs made from pieces of orange, black and green construction paper. If you want to be more creative with these easy paper Halloween crafts, you can cut out different facial features from construction paper to paste on the bag. You can add special scary features like fangs and horns. Fill the bag with goodies and fold and close the top with some tape. Cut some yarn and glue on the fold for hair.

Witch Masks

Paper plates are one of the most versatile easy paper Halloween crafts. Any Halloween decoration with a circular shape like a wreath or a pumpkin could be made out of paper plates. Aside from decorations, a variety of homemade masks can be made out of them like a witch mask.

In making witches from paper plates, simply paint the back part of your paper plate with light, lime or mint green. Let it dry and carefully cut out eye slots. You can trace the outline of the slots with black ink for effect. For the nose, cut a triangle from a piece of green construction paper and fold the triangle in half. Put some glue on the two long edges of the triangle and attach to the center of the plate just below the eyes. Cut a squiggly mouth from black construction paper and paste below the nose. Cut circles from brown construction paper for moles and warts.

Cut a triangle with curved edges from black construction paper and glue to the top of the plate to make a witch’s hat. Cut a long thin strip of construction paper and paste just below the triangular hat to serve as the hat’s base. Cut holes and insert rubber bands on the opposite sides of the mask. There are no other easy paper Halloween crafts than this.

Ghost Streamer

These easy paper Halloween crafts use additional materials other than paper. Get a circular object such as an old ping pong ball. Cut white crepe paper into long strips with widths that are slightly wider than the circumference of the ball. Stick the ball onto the center of one crepe strip. Put adhesive on the back of the crepe and ball and lay it horizontally on a vertically positioned strip. You should now have a cross of two strips with the ball at the center.

Stick a third strip of crepe to the back of the ball again. Do the same with the other two strips but this time, the crepe should be placed diagonally. Stick a fourth strip going in the opposite direction. Gather the remaining strips and continue sticking horizontally, vertically and diagonally.

Insert your hand under so that you are holding the very base of the pieces of glued crepe. Invert the strips such that the ball becomes completely covered. Gather the strips together and tie at the bottom of the ball. Draw ghostly features on the ball with a marker. Thread a piece of double white yarn on a small square of white cartolina and knot at the bottom. Stick the piece of cartolina on the head of your ghost.
