What is the best art and craft project you have done?

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

I have a lot of time on my hands this summer, and I would like a new hobby. I want to create something that will last a lifetime and make a great gift. What are some good things to do?
Everybody’s suggestions so far are good. I have done lots of sewing, needlepoint, cross-stitch etc. over the years, as well as scrap-booking and making my own greeting cards. The sculpting and large scale art projects for scenery, are a little beyond my present scope. I have done jewelry making in the past. The enameling is something I haven’t tried yet. Let’s see if anything more exotic comes up, and let the voters decide?
I really like the face mats, too! My Mom and I used to do a similar project but using old Greeting Cards, Christmas Cards, etc. If you get enough for each season, you can then laminate and change them for the seasons.

Green Crafts-How to Recycle Greeting cards and Make Wonderfully Unique Gift Tags

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

You can now recycle those beautiful hard to throw away greeting cards in a variety of ways.  For this project we show you how to create a unique and eye catching gift tag that would normally cost a few dollars if purchased in most stores.  By simply recycling a greeting card, you’ll be doing your part towards recycling and have a custom designed gift tag of your own.

Begin by using craft scissors that have a nice scalloped edge to cut out the front section of the greeting card.  Next, using a hole puncher with a design of your choice, punch out a hole, 1/2 inch from the top of what will soon be your custom gift tag.  Now, thread a pretty ribbon or decorative string through the hole creating a bow.  Try using a multi-colored ribbon that will coordinate with the colors of your gift wrapped package.  That is all there is to creating a simple and quick one of a kind gift tag.

For this project you will need the following supplies:

Recycled Greeting card Craft scissors Red and white plaid satin ribbon (¾ inch or small). Any coordinating pattern would be fine at long as the ribbon you choose to use is not a solid color.  For example, using a red and white candy striped ribbon instead of plaid ribbon would also work for this project (Christmas recycled greeting card.) Fine point writing pen to address the tag – black, red or green Wrapped gift box or package Hole puncher

Instant Dried Flowers

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Do you need dried flowers urgently without having to wait for weeks? What if, after waiting for weeks, the flowers you have dried are not as beautiful as they were when fresh, or you find out that they do not work all that well with your project? It could also be possible that by the time the flowers have dried and you realize that they do look beautiful, they are no longer available?

Gone are the days when you have to wait for weeks to dry flowers to be used for your craft projects or even as keepsakes. This could be a real dampener, especially if fresh flowers are likely to be available only for a few weeks. It is also quite likely that some flowers may not look as good dried as when they were fresh.

The Large Microwave Flower Press is just the right gadget for your pressing needs. It can dry a wide range of flowers, fauna and leaves in a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the power of the microwave and the type of flower being pressed. Since each flower has a different texture and different levels of moisture, you will have to use trial and error to achieve the results you desire. Some flowers may get burnt easily and some may require extensive heating in portions where they are thicker and in that case the outer edges may require extra protection to survive the excess heat, One thing good about the Flower Press is that it retains the original color of the flower to the maximum extent possible, which results in beautiful dried flowers.

Pressed Dried Flowers can be used in a variety of crafts including Greeting Cards, Scrapbook Pages, pictures, bookmarks and even to decorate candles, soaps, menus etc. The Microwave Flower Press can not only be used by you if you are keen on crafts, it also makes for a unique gift idea for someone you love, who is interested in the arts. It is also a great gift for the young ones as well as the elders in your family.

Get Creative With Dahle Crafting Tools

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Since it’s autumn, crafting season is kicking into high gear. With Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas on the way, if you are a crafter, you might be in need of some new tools to help make your work go a bit more smoothly. If so, you’ll want to check out Dahle’s lineup of crafting tools. Dahle is a German company that is known for its high-quality office machines and gadgets, so you can be confident you’re getting the best tools available. To find out what Dahle has to offer you, the crafter, please continue reading.

Card Maker and Trim Ruler. These two tools are rotary trimmers that make it fun and easy to create greeting cards, scrapbook items, and more. Both of these trimmers allow you to cut both straight lines and decorative patterns, and you can also score and perforate your paper with them. These trimmers are lightweight so you can tote them around and they have a 13-inch cutting length, so you can trim a lot of different items. Each trimmer has a built-in cutting mat with self-healing capabilities, as well as a ruler for easy measurement and three blade heads so you can choose whichever cutting pattern you want. You can cut up to three sheets of paper at once with these tools, so while they’re not ideal for heavy-duty cutting, you can still use them in your creative endeavors. Personal Trimmer Kit. The Dahle Personal Trimmer Kit offers a lot of the same features as the Card Maker and Trim Ruler. However, this trimmer is slightly more durable because the unit that is included is the Dahle Personal Rolling Trimmer 507. The 507 has a metal base for durability, but it’s still light enough so it can be transported without a lot of effort. This kit includes four different blades to create straight, deckle, and wavy cuts. It can also perforate paper. The blades are encased in plastic, so you’ll never feel the edge of the blade, and the blades are self-sharpening, as well. The 507 has a cutting capacity of seven sheets and you can cut items up to 12.5 inches long with it. Vantage Cutting Mats. Protecting your work surface is important and there’s no better way to do that than with a self-healing cutting mat. Dahle manufactures Vantage cutting mats that are extremely long-lasting, thanks to the five layers of plastic found in each mat. These mats heal themselves instantly, so you’ll be able to use one for a long time. Vantage cutting mats are available in clear, black, and blue, and five different sizes, ranging from 9″ x 12″ to 36″ x 48″, are available. Best of all, you can use both sides of the mat and each mat has a grid with both metric and standard measurements that can help you with measuring your project. Safety Edge. Sure, protecting your work surface is important, but safety is even more vital. When you’re working with cutting utensils such as craft knives, it is very easy to accidentally hurt yourself. Luckily, Dahle has developed the Safety Edge tool that can make crafting safer. The Safety Edge helps keep your fingers away from the knife blade as you cut, and it’s available in four lengths: 12″, 18″, 24″, and 36″. It has a rubber base to ensure that it stays where you need it and it also hangs up for easy storage when not in use.

Dahle has a lot of gadgets that are great for crafting. If you’re into getting creative, consider purchasing a Dahle crafting tool today.

Green Crafts-How to Recycle Greeting cards and Make Wonderfully Unique Gift Bags

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Have you ever thought of taking two items from Christmas that ordinarily are thrown out after the Christmas holidays are over to create a unique and eye catching embellishment gift wrap?  By simply recycling both a greeting card and a gift bag to make a useable and interesting one of a kind embellished gift bag, you will be doing your part towards recycling and have a custom design of your own.

First, use scissors to cut out and remove the front section of a greeting card.  Next, attach a small piece of double-sided foam stick tape to the back of your cut out.  You can find this in most craft stores, and sometimes even at the local drugstore.  Then, select a solid-colored recycled gift bag so that your embellishment will stand out against the solid color and become a focal point.  Now, simply attach your embellishment to the center of the gift bag and hold until foam sticker bonds to the bag.  Depending on the type and size of the greeting card cut out you select, an option would be to punch out a hole through the embellishment.  This would allow you to thread a ribbon (¾ inch width or less) through the opening.  You can also personalize your embellishment using a fine point sharpie pen to address a name on it if your embellishment allows enough space to do so.

Supplies:

Recycled greeting card Recycled solid colored gift bag Scissors Double-sided foam sticker tape Sharpie pen Ribbon (3/4 inch or smaller) Optional
