Thanksgiving Hand Print Turkey Craft

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

These hand print turkeys are an easy craft for your kids to make for Thanksgiving.  They are easy enough for toddlers and preschoolers to help make, but even older children will enjoy
tracing around their hands to make this fun turkey craft.

Supplies needed:

Brown felt
Colorful craft feathers
Google eye
Red pipe cleaner
Scissors
Black permanent marker
Rubber cement or craft glue

We chose to make our turkeys out of brown felt.  This is just one of many options, you could also use brown craft foam or brown construction paper.

First, use the black permanent marker to trace around your child’s hand on the brown felt.  Next cut out the hand tracing.  For younger children, you will have to do these steps for them.

Next turn over the piece of the felt so any permanent marker markings are on the backside of the felt.

The thumb of the handprint will be the turkey’s neck and head, so have your child use a little glue to attach a google eye where the eye should go.

Cut a small piece of red pipe cleaner for the turkey’s beak, approximately 1/2 inch long.  Fold the cut piece in half and have your child glue it beneath the turkey’s eye.

Next have your child brush some glue on each of the other fingers, and then have him press down one feather on each finger.

That’s it!  A quick, easy Thanksgiving craft that will be sure to please your child.  It’s also a great way to preserve your child’s small, adorable hand that will be bigger next year.

What kids/toddlers craft supplies do you have?

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

I have 2 toddlers and I’m starting a craft cabinet. I was just wondering what some of the basic supplies that I should buy up front, not necessarily special materials for special crafts. I’m more looking for a general list that most people have that will get us going! Also, I’m trying not to totally break the bank when getting these, so if you can suggest a cheap place to find most of this stuff that would be great!

Thank you very much!
Both are boys…ages 2 & 3, I have the crayons/markers/paper, but not much else–usually we like to just play, but they seem to like to do the craft when they go to a MDO program, so I thought I’d continue when it lets out for the summer. So I just needed some ideas on some supplies.

Toddlers And Halloween Crafts – Include Your Child In The Fun

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

If you are the parent of a toddler but want to include him or her in making the decorations this Halloween season and are looking for suitable Halloween crafts that you can make with your toddler, there are a number of crafts that are easy and fun and can help you bond with your little one. In addition, these crafts will also teach the toddler valuable skills that they will need when they finally go to school.

The handprint spiders are perhaps one of the most popular toddler Halloween crafts this season. All you need is black paint that is water soluble and a paper plate. Pour the paint onto another plate or in a pan. Place your toddlers hands flat into the pan of paint. All kids love this part. Ensure that the paint has covered the entire hand but do not let it get too gloppy. Then, place the child’s hand firmly onto the paper plate a little above the plate’s center. Make sure that all the fingers are splayed outwards. Now turn the plate upside down so that the print is at the bottom. Reapply paint on the toddlers hands and press down onto the plate in the same manner as before. Take care that the heels of the palms of both the prints match up with each other. After the paint dries up, paste some googly eyes. Pull a string through a hole punched at the top and hang it wherever you like.

The pumpkin seed wreath is another great Halloween craft that you can make with your toddler. Once you have your pumpkin carved, wash all the seeds and save them up. You can roast these seeds in your oven, sprinkle them with salt and eat them as a yummy treat. Apart from these, once the pumpkin seeds are dry, cut out a round in some orange construction paper and let your little one glue all the pumpkin seeds around the outer rim of the circle with all the pointed ends facing out. Once the outer row is finished, make another row inside it. Use any Halloween decoration to fill in the middle. You can glue candy corn, a witch from fun foam or just about anything that you can creatively come up with.

Search the internet inside out to find other toddler Halloween crafts that will be safe and fun to make with your toddler. Include your toddler in the decorations and let him or her know that there is always an excuse for making a fun craft.

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

All of us want to become good parents for our kids. Spending quality time with your kids is very essential in order to come close to your kids. In fact it is the best gift you can give to your child. Yet, it is easy to spend time with the grown up kids. We often keep wandering as to what activities do we do with them.

Surprisingly, we often underestimate our toddler’s abilities. Teach your toddlers some fun craft activities and help them carry on the same. You can look for many free and easy Halloween crafts that your little one would love to work on with you. Here are some interesting ideas to try out.

1. Bat with hand prints.

For this you primarily need some paper plates & washable black paint meant especially for craft purposes. Pour some black paint in the paper plate. Tell your child to put his hand in the paint. Make sure that his hand is fully covered. Now add a sheet of paper, press the child’s hand on one side with splayed fingers. Now, turn the paper towards back. Dip your child’s hand in the paint again and press his again hand on the paper following the heels of the imprint made before. Stick googly eyes to this bat or paint the eyes using white color. Make a hole at the top. Attach a string through this hole to hang the bat. Make many of these and hang all around the child’s room.

2. Halloween Ornaments with Fun Foam

Fun foam is among the essential craft items especially among the kids. This Halloween collect some chunks of fun foam typically in the Halloween shades that are black, orange, green and white. Now, draw some ovals and circles on the fun foam. With safety scissors let your child brush his or her craft & cutting skills. Make them cut out these shapes out of the fun foam. Mean while, you go ahead cutting shapes from the remaining pieces of fun foam. You might opt to work on interesting patterns like witches, scary cats, bats, ghosts, and many more. These shapes can easily be found on the internet. Now stick on these varied shapes on the ovals & circles you ha cut earlier. Finally, punch a hole on the top. Put a string in this hole and hang your child’s Halloween ornaments where ever you wish in the house!

While these are just a few ideas, free and easy toddler Halloween crafts are very commonly found on the internet. Now-a-days there are several web sites focusing on these crafts. These are easy and fun activities for kids of all ages. These fun projects are simple and memorable activities to carry on with your toddlers. Try these and gift your child moments for life!

Promote Brain Development by Using Arts and Crafts For Toddlers!

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

As adults, we understand what it means to appreciate art or to get our creative juices flowing, so to speak. Art makes us happy. Sometimes we learn something new from looking at or even creating a piece of artwork. Children can enjoy in just the same way as adults. They can appreciate when something is beautiful and they too can learn something new from art. Arts and crafts for toddlers is especially important in the brain development of children. Children learn abstract thinking skills through exploring arts and crafts. When children take a piece of modeling clay or paper, they use it to create something new. This helps to develop their imagination and creativity. Toddler art projects help children to see things in a new way and this helps them to see things outside of the box.

Arts and crafts for toddlers is also very important in the development of eye and hand coordination. They figure out how to use their hands to cut, draw, glue, etc… Fine motor skills are essential in the development of young children and art is a great way to get your child developing in that area. Children love it when you give them a piece of paper and a pair of scissors. It can keep them entertained for hours. When they get bored with that, give them another piece of paper and a glue stick. Then have them glue their cuttings on the paper to create a pretty picture. This works best when the cutting papers are multiple colors. Of course, cutting and gluing should be done with adult supervision especially for toddlers.

Art projects are a great way to allow your child to express themselves in a safe manner. They can draw a picture of something that may have recently been upsetting to them or express something that they are happy about as well. Arts and crafts for toddlers is also a fun way for children to explore the world around them. Although it is fun, it is also a great outlet for all of your toddler’s excess energy as well. We all know how much energy children have and how they get bored very easily. We don’t want them sitting in front of the TV all fo the time so we must give them something interesting to do.

Lastly, arts and crafts for toddlers is a great way for families to interact together and have fun. Family night can be used as a time to spend together creating something. Saturdays can be a great time for dad and toddler to build a bird house and decorate it. The great thing about art is that it can be almost anything! If your child uses their imagination and creates something new they will benefit whether it is physically, emotionally, intellectually, or socially.

What’s in your toddler’s arts/craft supply stash?

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

My 27 month old daughter loves to participate in any kind of craft, but I am not an especially crafty person myself. What types of craft projects/supplies would be fun for a toddler. I would like to make a big kit of supplies for a Christmas gift.

So, what’s in your toddler’s arts/craft supply stash?

Toddler Crafts, Fun Toddlers Activity

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Many women enjoy the hobbies of arts and crafts.  When there are children running around the house, it can make it difficult to continue the enjoyment of arts and crafts.  There is only one solution for this problem, and that is to get your toddlers involved with you on some simple arts and crafts tasks.

A great, safe way to get your kids involved with your crafts projects it to make things with popsicle sticks.  You can have your kids decorate the popsicle sticks with markers to their liking.  Make sure you purchase washable markers.  Also, go for quantity, not quality, because more often than not your toddlers will forget to put the lids back on the markers.

After they finish putting color on the sticks, find some pictures.  You can use photographs, pictures out of magazines, or use a picture of them.  Use the popsicle sticks as a frame for the picture.  After this, tie a string to each side of the picture, so you can hang it anywhere.

I am sure you have heard of macaroni necklaces.  Every toddler should get the thrill of making their first macaroni necklace.  Just put some macaroni in a jar, add some food coloring, and shake them around until you get the color you are looking for.  Repeated this process until you get a satisfactory amount of color.  Let the macaroni dry on paper towels.

After you get all of the macaroni colored and dry, provide your toddler with a piece of shoestring or yarn.  Make sure to tape one end, so the macaroni does not fall off.  Once you show them how to put the macaroni on the string, it will be easy for them.  Let them pick the colors and design.

Then there is the always famous sock puppet.  If you haven’t heard of the sock puppet, this one is simple.  All you need to do is decorate a sock with a mouth, eyes, and nose.  A sock puppet can provide hours of entertainment for toddlers and can be made within minutes.

Another entertaining (and slightly messy) crafts idea is making art out of fruitloops.  First, open the box of fruitloops and sort them by color.  After you get all of the colors sorted, put them in a zip-lock baggy.  Crush them in the baggy until they get a sand-like appearance.  After you have all of the colors crushed in baggies, you can put them in layers in a baby food jar.  All of the fun of sand, without the risk of worrying about your toddler eating it.

Your toddler will certainly enjoy making binoculars.  All you need is two paper towel rolls, a  hole punch, glue, and yarn.  First, glue the two paper towel rolls together so they look like binoculars.  Next, punch a whole in each side and tied the yarn to each side.  Do this so they can wear the binoculars around their neck like a necklace.  Let them look through the binoculars and describe what they see.  It is always fun to give them the impression that they are able to see things that you can’t.  Like they have special powers with their binoculars.

Toddler Crafts-What to Make

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Children, especially toddlers are very curious about things around them. They wish to explore everything and learn how things work and if they can, make their own. They are also well known to be highly imaginative and very creative; they can perceive thoughts and pictures just by looking at a shape.

Toddlers are new to the idea of shapes; these make the most useful item in Toddler Crafts. One can give a toddler a shape and ask them what objects they know have the same shape. At this age, it is perfectly fine to have their hands dirty with paint or color or glue and glitter. This is what makes activities most interesting to them – the idea that they are able to touch things and be able to make new things from scratch.

A good idea for Toddler Crafts is to have fun with shapes. Though usually, playing and stringing macaroni is a great activity for them, having new ideas would also come greatly appreciated. A simple idea for kids this age is to be able to make a face using various shapes. Coordination with drawing is not perfect for this age which is why pre-cut shapes come handy for them. By giving them a few pieces of various shapes cut from colored paper and ask them to create something by combining the shapes can be a marvelous project. Some would find that some toddlers will make distinguishable results such as a face, a house or a plant. Others may make theirs a bit more abstract; however, when they are asked what the shapes were made in to, they can be able to explain it with great detail.
